Teachers Training Workshop held at Cuncolim.

Goa Sudharop Community Development Inc. USA in association with Rotary Club of Cuncolim, organized a day’s teachers training workshop “Effective Discipline in Schools” for South Goa school teachers on 25^th September, 2008 at Cuncolim.

Goa Sudharop is a Goan Diaspora volunteer, non-profit NGO working for betterment of Goa and Goans worldwide. Goa Sudharop observes 2008 as “Year of Education” in Goa, and in line with this theme Goa Sudharop has chosen to specially focus on training and empowerment of school teachers. Hence, this workshop, which is one of the many such types of educational programmes being conducted by Goa Sudharop this year.

Goa Sudharop Community Development Inc. a Goans Diaspora, non-profit, volunteer NGO working for betterment of Goa and Goans worldwide, will have their Annual Awards Presentation at Kala Academy (Black Box Hall), Panjim, on Saturday, 29th December, 2007 from 4 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. Mr. George Pinto, Goa Sudharop’s USA-based co-founder and Director will be the Chief Guest.

Goa Sudharop observed 2007 as “Year of the Environment” and conducted throughout the year, at the very grassroots level in Goa, several activities like power point environmental awareness presentations for many school groups, inter-school environmental competitions, a rain water harvesting workshop for high school teachers, sponsorship of cartoonist Alexis website on the environmental theme, preparation of Goa-specific environmental standards for the building industry, and several other promotional activities with a view to create environmental awareness and stress the paramount need of protecting and conserving nature. Evidently, Goa Sudharop notes with satisfaction that with these humble volunteer efforts it was possible to involve over a thousand students, 200 school teachers and hundreds of individuals in Goa to participate in this environmental awareness and conservation programme!

Good evening honored guests,

On behalf of the Board of Directors and Management of Goa Sudharop, I am pleased and delighted to welcome you to this event of launching Goa Sudharop Seniors e-book, and awards to Goan orphanages at the hands of our USA based co-founder Mr.George J.Pinto.

The Seniors e-book is a collection of nostalgic essays penned by and about seniors from around the world on emotive themes like “Reminiscences of my Goan Youth”, “What I can give back to Goa and Goans”. Also others have written tributes to Seniors whose lives meant a lot for them. The meticulous editing of the book is the labour of love by our writer-Volunteer Miss Valerie Rodrigues. Whilst, the awards are in different amounts to various Goan orphanages who care for and bring up orphans from all Goan communities, including children affected by HIV/ AIDS. actually, these two highlights of the event are the concluding parts of the activities Goa sudharop had planned for the years 2005 and 2006 with the themes “Year of the Child” and “Year of the Seniors”, respectively. This year 2007 Goa Sudharop is in the process of executing a carefully planned and results- oriented awareness programme at the grass root level on the burning issue of protecting the environment under the theme “Year of the Environment”.

The Seniors e-book is a collection of essay by and about Goa seniors from around the world. The book is edited by Valerie Rodrigues. Approximately, Rs.1, 75,000/- will be awarded to various Goan orphanages who serve orphans from different Goan communities, including some children who are affected by HIV/ AIDS.

The Goa Sudharop e-book titled “A Mosaic of Memories” was launched by USA- based co-founder of Goa Sudharop, Mr. George J. Pinto, at a well attended function at Hotel Mandovi this evening. The function also saw Goa Sudharop distributing cash awards amounting to approximately two lakhs to various Goan orphanages who serve orphans from different Goan communities, included children affected with HIV / AIDS.

YEAR OF THE GOAN ENVIRONMENT 2007

Goa Sudharop observes 2007 as the Year of Goan Environment or one may say “Green Goa”.

We believe that the burning issue of our fast degrading environment witnessed the world over can be ignored only at our peril. Environmental scientists forewarn us that the global warming responsible for the climatic changes we experience will worsen and will make life difficult and unsafe in not too distant a future. Catastrophes like tsunami tidal waves, melting of glaciers world over including our Himalayas, rise in sea levels, droughts, heat waves, famines, epidemics, etc. will kill and render homeless millions of people world over, besides devastating billions of dollars worth assets and infrastructure, etc. as well as submerge millions of square kilometers low-lying lands like Bangladesh, Maldives and others! Environmentalists warn us again and again, that this is all due to human neglect, myopia and greed for unbridled material prosperity or “development” destroying in its wake the natural environment. God created this beautiful planet for us to live in peace and happiness, but we humans, like spoilt- children, keep on polluting the air, water, and land without realizing that nature is like our mother unfailingly sustaining us all the time. Mother nature gives us everything and at no cost but we in turn only destroy it instead of living in harmony with it. How sad? And, is it not a sin on our part to do so?

I am really happy to be here with you today for this Fitness Session specially sponsored by Goa Sudharop in association with Panjim Senior Citizens Guild with the resource person Mr. Mahesh S. Kamat. The initiative came from your President, Mr. Manuel Alvares and Goa Sudharop volunteer member Miss Valeria Rodrigues, which I do appreciate and thank for.

Goa Sudharop greatly respects and values our Seniors for they are the architects of our society, and are a vital link between our past and present, as also a precious help in building a vibrant future. They are a source of much needed wisdom and guidance to our youth.

Goa Sudharop Community Development Inc., a non- profit, volunteer NGO working for betterment of Goa and Goans worldwide will present their annual awards at Caritas Complex Hall, St. Panjim, on 3rd January 2006, from 4.30 to 6.p.m.

In accordance with the Goa Sudharop theme for 2005 (Year of the Child) and realizing the monumental wok that needs to be done for the differently abled children in Goa, Goa Sudharop has chosen to make cash and other awards to deserving NGOs, Teachers and differently abled children in a modest effort to promote the care and integration of the differently abled in our society.

Press Release on the RWH Workshop

As part of it's celebrations on the theme "Year of the Environment", a workshop on Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) was recently organized by Goa Sudharop Community Development Inc in association with the Botanical Society of Goa (BSG) and the Britto's Old Boys' Association (BOB). Held at Institute Menezes Braganza on 11th Sept 2007, the program was aimed at school and college teachers and elicited an enthusiastic response with nearly 50 participants taking part in the program.

After a welcome address by Mr. Ibonio D'Souza, Board Member and local representative of Goa Sudharop, and an introduction by Roque Carvalho of the BOB, the workshop was inaugurated by Principal Newman Fernandes of St. Xavier's College. Prof Newman gave a very informative Powerpoint presentation of the RWH project on the Xavier's campus. The technical session that followed was moderated by Dr. Hiremath, Head of Department of Botany, Dhempe College, Panjim. Dr A. D. Chachadi, senior lecturer at Goa University and Architect Pravin Sabnis who were the resource persons for the workshop, explained the need, and the ways and means available, to replenish our ground and subsurface water resources.
